Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia’s First Cruise Liner

This project began when we were approached by SMC Design after Cruise Saudi had identified and included Tigerplay projects within their initial briefing document for their new ship, the first ever Arabian cruise liner, AROYA.

Creating The Biggest Play Area On A Cruise Liner

We were asked by SMC Design to take a lead with the design of ‘Sailors Shore’ which included; The Reception Area, The Shipyard Workshop, The Nursery, the Discoverers’ Zone and the Captains’ Zone children’s areas. The brief was to create a series of play spaces for children aged 0-12 that shared a common identity, included interactive technology and immersive sensory lighting; all with an other-worldly maritime theme and produced to the highest standard possible. We worked closely with SMC Design, combining their extensive expertise in cruise ship interior design with our own specialism in creating state-of-the-art play equipment.

Maximising Play Value

We drew on our experience on the variety of projects we’ve delivered over the past twenty years – on land and at sea – but we also wanted to push ourselves to explore new and innovative ways for creating this immersive play space. Low ceiling heights encouraged us to be creative in maximising the play value of the equipment in the available space. After our initial concept had been created, we worked closely with our trusted partners to help us shape and formulate our plans, using materials suitable for the marine environment. As well as detailed conceptual proposals, Tigerplay provided a comprehensive technical design document to the client which took 4 months to complete.

Unique and Special Design Features

LED lighting was incorporated into many elements of the play equipment in new and exciting ways. Our friends at Clever Association guided us on how to best utilise modern technology to enhance the play experience. Interactive lighting was integrated within all the spaces we designed. Interactive gaming units were sourced and supplied by world-leading manufacturers, including the gaming tables and wall games. Scent machines were provided within the shipyard workshop and the sensory cave to elevate the overall sensory experience.

Interactive Technology

An interactive LED corner display projected an aquarium that reacts to users as they walk past. Bespoke screens were sourced to designate entrance ways into the different play zones. Custom-made rock formations, a whale, an octopus and a school of 150 fish were custom-made and suspended from the ceilings to enhance the aesthetic and experience of the space.

The Challenges of Working on a Cruise Line

Due to the complex nature of the design and the ship undergoing a complete refurbishment during our installation, we had to react quickly to developments on site to ensure the deadline was met. We were working alongside various other teams on board during the refurbishment, and our friends at MJM Marine contributed greatly to a successful installation, whose skills and experience in marine outfitting are second to none.

Logistics and Materiality

The limitations on the types of materials allowed for use on board a cruise ship meant we needed to change the way we approached manufacturing and seek new options. Logistically, we organised over 50 deliveries and around 60 flights to and from the ship, with our staff  working on 3-4 week rotations spanning a 14 week installation.

An Awe-Inspiring Indoor Playground

This project is a great example of how we bring concepts to life. When seeing the original concept design renders next to photography of the finished installation, it’s hard to tell the difference. We take pride in producing awe-inspiring play spaces that not only look spectacular but are built to last, with children’s safety and enjoyment always at the forefront of our minds. We’ve received glowing feedback from the AROYA team and the younger families enjoying the unique space aboard Arabia’s first ever cruise liner.
